It's frustrating, upsetting, and extremely common: impotence is when
a man cannot get or keep an erection. Whether the cause is physical, psychological,
or a combination of both, impotence can be treated. Seeking help from
a medical doctor or sex and marriage counselor can relieve your anxiety
and make your sex life fulfilling again.
Physical causes of impotence can include disorders that restrict penis
blood flow, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and hardening of the
arteries. Conditions which damage nerves in the penis such as diabetes,
alcoholism, or kidney disease can cause impotence. Drugs such as some
blood pressure medicine, alcohol, nicotine, or diuretics may have impotence
as a side effect. Physical conditions can also lead to psychological barriers.
For example, drinking too much alcohol can make erection less likely.
Once that has happened, you may feel anxious about your next lovemaking,
creating a situation in which impotence is more likely. It can be hard
to escape this cycle without help.
Psychological causes of impotence often include work pressures, financial
worries, fear of aging, or frustration with relationships. When someone
is impotent during a period of depression or anger, it's as if his body
demands that he confront his feelings. Misunderstanding of normal male
sexuality can also cause impotence. In your 40's, it will take you longer
to get an erection than in your 20's. In your 60's, it will take longer
than in your 40's. But there is no reason that a man of any age cannot
enjoy a fulfilling sex life.
